What's so great about Autumn?

Sun

The autumn sun is beautiful and blinding. It sits low in the sky creating rosey mornings and sun sets that bathe the landscape in an orange glow. Autumn light makes everything look more beautiful – it's stunning for sightseeing, exploring and going for walks.

Harvest

Autumn time = Harvest time! This means there is likely to be great produce markets around and fresh goodies, veg and cider in local farm shops. All the fields will be looking golden, the smells of freshly-cut crops will fill the air and the large harvest moon will hang low in the sky. The autumn harvest is a magical time of year and is celebrated by many cultures.

Outdoors

Walks are particularly enjoyable during the autumn. The countryside looks great, with a firework display of colours decorating trees, hedgerows and fields. (Plus the lighting is excellent for photos!) Woodland walks are particularly enjoyable; the carpet of leaves underfoot is crispy and red and the trails are colourful. It's still a good temperature for walking too: you aren't out and about in scorching heat all day, but the chill of winter hasn't reached the air either – a comfortable medium.

New Flavours

Try your hand at foraging and use new flavours in cooking. It's a good time of year for wild mushrooms, but if you are planning on collecting them remember it is easy to stumble upon poisonous ones – so do be sure you know what you're looking for. Different nuts will be ready at this time, such as beech nut and hazelnut. Apples are always a good one in autumn, and keep an eye out for raspberries, elderberries, blackberries and rose hips too.

Wildlife

Autumn is a great time for wildlife. With all the nuts and berries many smaller creatures such as squirrels and mice will be foraging and stocking up for the winter months. Autumn is the time of change – birds will either be arriving or departing on their migratory journeys, so you're likely to spot a great range of bird species and different flocks forming.

It's rutting season for deer. Red deer are particularly spectacular at this time, with the stags developing their huge antlers and competing for female attention with their displays of antler clashing.
